Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Android M drops on OnePlus One via CyanogenMod 13.0

OnePlus has followed up its Android Marshmallow update for the OnePlus Two. According to recent reports, an Android M-layered platform has started rolling out to the original OnePlus One flagship.

The rollout actually started Friday last week, according an announcement posted on the OnePlus forums. However, since the release is for the global and unlocked version, the rollout is on a staggered basis and has just started picking up. In addition, the version is not the stock Android M version originally released by Google. Rather, OnePlus layered the new Android M platform with a new update on the CyanogenMod OS for the OnePlus One, bringing the CM version to 13.0.

In the patch notes on the CyanogenMod website, there are at least four update scenarios for users to select based on the current CM platform OS version as well as a special update case for CM OS on Nexus devices.

Since the Android Marshmallow update is not a stock one, OnePlus and CyanogenMod have a number of platform-specific changes and improvements on top of the Android 6.0 tweaks and changes, particularly the enhanced apps permission build in Android M. One of the main changes seen in the CM 13.0 platform is that there is a new enhanced camera app featured in the update, based on Snapdragon camera app. There is also a new SMS/MMS app, as CM 13.0 switches over to the AOSP build of Android M from the previous Qualcomm-based messaging platform. The new app introduces a number of changes to the SMS interface like a new Quick Reply option.

Meanwhile, the update itself is not finished, since it is also stated that mini-updates will be forthcoming once the CM 13.0 update is installed on OnePlus One devices.

OnePlus One is the original flagship from the China-based OnePlus company, and the lineup itself is dubbed the "flagship killer."
