Xiaomi Mi 5c release date, specs rumors: Leaks reveal a $144 price tag for the phone

It seems that Xiaomi is getting ready to reveal a new iteration as new leaks suggest that the anticipated Xiaomi Mi 5c variant already has a price tag.

According to GSM Arena, reports out of China indicate that as per leaked posters, the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5c will have a price tag of only CNY999, about half of the original cost for the recently-released Xiaomi Mi 5s. Being a step-down variant, it is already expected that the new release will have a budget-friendly price. Since the Xiaomi Mi 5 series is a global release, it is also likely that the Mi 5c will also be available in other regions, sticking to an estimated price of $144 or €136.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has yet to come out with confirmed details about the upcoming launch though supposed specs and features for the Mi 5c have already cropped up. Previously touted as the Xiaomi Meri, the Mi 5c is said to feature the China-based tech maker's first, in-house chipset, the Pinecone SoC. However, there are also observers that believe Xiaomi may likely put up a MediaTek chipset instead, possibly a Helio P20 processor. The SoC will be paired with either 2 or 3 GB of RAM and at least 32 GB of onboard storage. Although a late-year release, it is also highly likely that the new Xiaomi iteration will only come out with Android 6.0 Marshmallow layered with MiUI 8.

As to when fans can expect the new device, it is said that Xiaomi plans to release the Mi 5c soon. Although the tech maker has not yet announced it, supposed real-life images of the device have already been published online, hinting that the new iteration may have already been developed and tested.

When released, the Xiaomi Mi 5c will complete the Mi 5 lineup together with the base model and the recently-launched Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus iterations.
