Why Christian Leaders Should Use 'Intentional Language'

True Christian leaders need to be mindful of their language, and be sure to speak the truth at all times with love, dignity and compassion.

Dr. Steve Greene, publisher and executive vice president of Charisma Media, wrote in an article for Charisma News that medical professionals often remind their patients that "you are what you eat." In the same way, the Word of God tells Christians that they are what they speak.

"Our year ahead will be impacted by every word we utter," he said as he shared three Bible verses from the book of James.

James 1:26 says, "If anyone among you seems to be religious and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain."

James 3:5 warns, "Even so, the tongue is a little part of the body and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles."

Meanwhile, James 3:6 considers the tongue a "world of evil." It says, "The tongue is among the parts of the body, defiling the whole body, and setting the course of nature on fire, and it is set on fire by hell."

Greene said if people simply consider these three verses and learn to bridle their tongue, then they can expect a much healthier and prosperous year ahead. "And perhaps we will even sleep better," he noted.

However, Greene said it is near impossible for people to last 365 days and only speak good words. As much as they try, there will always be trying days that push people to the limits of their patience.

"I never intend to speak harmful words but some days, I seem to have advanced skills in saying the wrong thing," he admitted.

During those days, Greene said he seeks God's help and pray, "Jesus, I know I have to give an account for every word I speak, so please help me bridle my tongue today. I cannot do it without you."
