Although there is no confirmation yet that a new season will happen for novel-to-TV adaptation "Wayward Pines," it is expected that should the show continue, it will divert from its original book trilogy.

According to observers, most of the three books have already been covered in the last two seasons of "Wayward Pines," particularly season 2 which saw events from the last two books. Should season 3 continue, producer M. Night Shyamalan and his creative team will have to branch out the stories.

This also seems to be what the EP has been thinking. According to Movie News Guide, author and executive producer Blake Couch hinted that the cliffhanger in season 2 may pave the way for more complex events in the next season. Of note is the finale, where it is teased that the community of Wayward Pines is slowly being awakened. Reportedly, this development may branch out into other story lines in season 3, and even a refresh – with another time jump – also being considered.

However, the question still remains if "Wayward Pines" will continue on with its third season. If producer M. Night Shyamalan has his way, the show has a "three-season story." Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden agrees.

The executive said, "It's still the number one scripted show of the summer. It struggled. Most shows struggle year to year. We don't know yet what we're going to find when the multi-platform numbers roll up, ultimately how big that audience is. I think I'm sharing a point of view of Night's that the first couple episodes were trying to find its way in a reset."

"Wayward Pines" has been adapted from the original novel trilogy by Blake Couch. For the second season, the show averaged 2.4 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating in Live+Same Day ratings, which is admittedly a slump from its 3.8-million viewer shares in the original season run.
