'Wayward Pines' season 2 renewal? No word yet on new season

Since "Wayward Pines" aired its thrilling season 1 finale last July, fans of the series have been eagerly awaiting news of a season 2 renewal for the Fox show. The series, which is helmed by executive producer M. Night Shyamalan and showrunner Chad Hodge, was a hit as viewers tuned in to see "The Sixth Sense" director's first TV project.

While there is no official word yet whether the series is returning to the network, Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Gary Newman said that the show's return will depend on Shyamalan and "Wayward Pines" author Blake Crouch.

"We're waiting to hear a pitch from them," said Newman at the 2015 TCA summer press tour. When the show comes back, the CEO said that they will need a new showrunner, as Hodge is not returning. Newman revealed that Shyamalan had someone in mind but the director is "not prepared to announce yet."

If season 2 depends on Shyamalan and Crouch's pitch, it's possible that fans are in for a long wait as the director is currently working on a new thriller starring James McAvoy.

On Oct. 5, Shyamalan took to Twitter to update fans about his new film and wrote, "Insane day in preproduction on the new thriller. We are four weeks out. Crew together for the first time." Prior to working on the new film, Shyamalan released his latest movie, "The Visit," last month. The film, which reportedly had a modest budget of $5 million, brought in $83 million worldwide.

Newman said that in a perfect world, they would be making that decision about a new season "relatively soon."

"Ideally we'd like to bring it back right where we had it this year, because it really had a pretty great season," he said.

It was previously rumored that a potential second installment of "Wayward Pines" would have different characters and cast but will be set in the same world. Shyamalan also told Deadline last July that he and Crouch "do have an idea" for the new season.
