Two in court over policewoman shooting

Two men are due in court on Friday charged with the attempted murder of a policewoman who was shot as she investigated reports of intruders at a pub, police said on Friday.

Wayne McDonald, 46, and David Tyrell, 37, were also charged with robbery, firearms offences and false imprisonment, Lancashire Police said in a statement.

A third man was arrested on suspicion of robbery in Kirkham, west of Preston, late on Thursday. The 54-year-old from Blackpool was not named.

Dog handler PC Katie Johnson, 29, was shot outside the Hospital Inn pub in Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire, on New Year's Eve.

She was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital with 12 pellets in her leg. She has since made a recovery.

Police said that a second officer, dog handler PC Ian Tinsley, was also violently threatened moments after his colleague was shot.

In a statement, Johnson said: "The past few days have been a particularly stressful time for me and my family.

"I don't think the reality of what happened on Monday has sunk in yet.

"I plan to get myself ready for action and look forward to returning to work soon."

The two men, who were arrested on Monday, are due to appear at Chorley magistrates court on Friday.
