'True Detective' Season 3 news: renewal still not confirmed after failure of season 2

HBO's "True Detective" had a fabulous Season 1, followed by a second season that went downhill. As The Independent recalls, the first run of the show starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Up until today, as the article states, the first season is revered as a modern classic. And then the second season came along, starring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn. Unfortunately, it wasn't as well-received as the first season.

Ever since the failure of Season 2, fans and critics have both been fairly certain that there would be no new season. The show had been as good as written off, when a new piece of information from the big names at HBO finally gave fans some hope.

The revelation, Forbes reports, came from HBO's newly appointed president of programming Casey Bloys. Bloys, who succeeded Michael Lombardo, announced at HBO's Television Critics Association press day, "It is not dead, but there's no take on a third season yet."

Collider reports that at the event, Bloys went on to say that he's open to someone else being roped in to write the episodes for the third season.

The first two seasons in the series were written by Pizzolatto. Considering how every single episode in Seasons 1 and 2 had been scripted by the writer, bringing in a new author will undoubtedly bring about a change in tune in the forthcoming episodes. Of course, Pizzolatto will not be entirely out of the picture. The script for the new season will be supervised by the novelist, and it might still feature some familiar strains.

A new writer hasn't been zeroed in on so far. Rumours surrounding the new season also suggested that a new showrunner may be brought in to run the new episodes. However, the only official statement we have until now reveals that a third season may be coming. No other details have been confirmed.
