'The Vampire Diaries' season 6: Stefan to turn to Caroline after Damon's disappearance

The Vampire Diaries -- "Rescue Me" CW

In the sixth season of "The Vampire Diaries," Stefan will seek comfort with Caroline after Damon went back on the Other Side.

Caroline (Candice Accola) is expected to be at Stefan's side during this difficult time of coming to terms with his brother's disappearance. However, TVD executive producer Julie Plec hinted that the presence of the blonde vampire will not be enough to fill the sadness and emptiness in Stefan's heart left by Damon.

The bond between Stefan and Caroline was strengthened in season 5 and fans saw how the two vampires developed the friendship for each other since season 2 when Stefan helped Caroline in the journey of her new life as a vampire. Now, it is Caroline's turn to help Stefan.

Plec also teased that the sixth season will be "a character-defining journey for Stefan and it'll change him quite a lot."

"At what point does he decide to give up or keep searching for answers?" she added.

Meanwhile, good news to "The Vampire Diaries" fans, Damon and Bonnie will come back next season. The cliffhanger final episode of the fifth season showed Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) may have returned to The Other Side as a human, which sparked rumors that the two silently exited the series.

"We will definitely see Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham on the show. I mean, there's a million different ways that you can do that. But as far as in what context — how, why, and where? — that's part of the mystery," Plec said.

However, the next season will focus on the other characters coming to terms with Damon and Bonnie's disappearance. Fans can assume that the first few episodes would be about the emotions of the characters.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 will air in its usual timeslot in October 2014 on the CW Network.
