'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' news: Nintendo director and producer reveal 'Skyrim' influence on latest 'Zelda' game

Creators of the award-winning video game "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" confirmed "Skyrim" had an influence on the game. A director and producer from Nintendo stated that they analyzed the open-world gameplay of "Skyrim" before making "Breath of the Wild."

In an interview with GameSpot, Nintendo director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma explained the influence of "Skyrim" on the "Zelda" video game installment.

Fujibayashi stated that they wanted to learn everything about open-world platform to fully maximize the game they are about to develop. "I obviously am well versed in them. I know what's happening in them. But this ending up in this kind of bigger open world really started from the prototype stage where, just kind of naturally by virtue of what we wanted to do in this game (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild)," he said.

Aonuma shared that he had played "Skyrim" in the past, explaining, "In the past I've also actually said that I have played Skyrim. But we don't look at it from, 'Oh, what kind of things can we take from this game?' It's more of like, 'How can we prepare for this? What should we expect from games like this?'"

"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is one of the most successful video game releases of 2017. The video game was recognized as Game of the Year at this year's The Game Awards. "Breath of the Wild" also won awards for Best Game Direction, and Best Action/ Adventure Game.

The open-world setting and entire gameplay function of "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" was well received by both fans and critics. After its release on March 3 for the Nintendo Switch, the game got a perfect score of 10 from IGN and TrustedReviews.

Nintendo recently launched the second downloadable content pack for the game.
