'Star Wars Rebels' season 3 air date, spoilers: Episode 3 introduces Rogue Squadron member Wedge Antilles

The new season of "Star Wars Rebels" continues. This time, the new series bridges the canon story, as episode 3 introduces Rogue Squadron member Wedge Antilles.

The upcoming episode is titled "The Antilles Extraction." Its synopsis reads, "Sabine goes undercover as a cadet in the Empire's elite flight academy to help free several young pilots who want to defect to the rebellion."

Meanwhile, a new teaser trailer for the upcoming episode has also come out. It confirms the introduction of the Rogue Squadron pilot into the "Star Wars Rebels" universe. However, instead of being a straight-out rebellion member, the new episode touches on Antilles' back story. It seems that before being a decorated rebellion pilot, Antilles first started as a pilot cadet and a Tie Fighter aviator.

Speaking about the upcoming episode, "Star Wars Rebels" showrunner Dave Filoni said that the introduction of various canon characters reiterates the show as part of the over-all "Star Wars" universe. Filoni tells SlashFilm: "We have a lot of Rebel pilots. And well maybe some of these guys crossover. So you get Wedge and you get Y-Wings, which is kind of showing us again that we're building towards that New Hope moment where the Rebels seem to be structured in a different way than we were in the beginning of Star Wars Rebels, which is they were just a band on their own with very little communication to a major core."

"Star Wars Rebels" is an interim series that is set in between the old and new trilogies. It is set five years before the events in "Star Wars IV: A New Hope," and the show chronicles the adventures of a group of rebels aboard a space fighter called the Ghost. The series is a look at the beginnings of the Rebel Alliance, the events following the fall of the Jedi Council, the shift from the Galactic Republic to the Empire.

Episode 3, "The Antilles Extraction," premieres on Oct. 8 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Disney XD.
