"Star Wars" director J.J. Abrams is not being fazed by the dark side of the franchise's community, as the next sequel in the current trilogy will not be affected by negative fan outcry.
The said fan objection pertains to trolls and male fans who have decided that the latest movie puts more importance to the role of the film's women than that of the men. It seems the backlash against the current trilogy is related to women getting more prominent roles in the franchise, hence why lots of male fans are "threatened."
Those who still liked the movie, regardless of how many people hated the current trilogy because of the notion mentioned above, need not worry as Abrams will continue the new premise and strong female roles in the next movie, which is "Episode IX." He also has spoken out amidst the negative opinion of said trolls towards him and Rian Johnson, who was the director of "The Last Jedi."
"We're not asking to take away the male point of view or male artistry or male contribution. We're simply saying, 'What is fair?' I can see why people might get freaked out by it, but the people who are getting freaked out are the people who are accustomed to that privilege, and this is not oppression, this is about fairness," said Abrams. This means people who do not like the current "Star Wars" trilogy for giving half the spotlight to female characters should reconsider their views as per Abrams' explanation.
With this in mind, Abrams thinks that most of the people who think like the said trolls and female character objectionists are sexist and will not let them decide the creative direction for the movie. As for those with legitimate criticisms about "The Last Jedi" and even want Abrams to retcon or fix most of their issues with it, Abrams also stated that he will continue what the last movie built upon and will not change anything which Johnson has already done.
Fans will have to wait and see how the yet-to-be-titled "Episode IX" plays out and should keep their eyes peeled for any announcement from Abrams.
