'Spider-Man' spinoff news: Sony now working on another antihero movie

Marvel
Morbius, who first appeared in the 1970s "The Amazing Spider-Man" #101, will hit the big screen.

It has been first announced that a movie centering the "Spider-Man" villain "Venom" is in the work. Now, another antagonist of the friendly neighborhood spinoff film is about to hit the big screen, "Morbius."

Morbius is known as the living vampire from "The Amazing Spider-Man" 1970s comic, issue number 101. Originally, he is Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist who tried to cure himself by injecting a serum from bats. Instead of healing him, this makes him a vampire-like creature that gives him super strength and superb spontaneous effect.

However, this also gives him a thirst for human blood. Although he is Spider-Man's antagonist, he later becomes a Marvel antihero. Morbius also appeared in "Vampire Tales" and "Adventure Into Fear," both 1970s Marvel comics. He is then re-imagined as a traditional vampire in Marvel's Ultimate universe, which inspired the Marvel Cinematic Universe and "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

According to the The Hollywood Reporter, "Morbius" has been secretly underdeveloped in Sony studio. It would be handled by the "Power Rangers," "Dracula Untold," and "Gods of Egypt" writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. In fact, the two already submitted their movie script to the company.

Just last June 28, Sony unveiled its collaboration movie with Marvel Studios, "The Spider-Man: Homecoming." This revealed how the young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) successfully joined the Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, the movie studio is eyeing to create its own cinematic universe. As it owns the rights to "Spider-Man," it opts to use the franchise's characters, although the friendly neighborhood would never be seen in the films. This will be called Sony's Marvel Universe.

It will be led by Tom Hardy's "Venom," the antihero Eddie Brock and the fourth recipient of the Venom Symbiote. The film is said to begin its production earlier this year and set to be released in 2018. There is also "Silver & Black" movie. It is a film about the superheroes Black Cat and Silver Sable that will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, although it is still in the early stage of development.
