Sega seems to be readying a major announcement on its iconic "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise. Speculations suggest that a new title is in development and fans may expect the upcoming game to have crossover characters.

The Irish Examiner reports that Sega recently sent out an email survey to fans asking about what they want to see in the next "Sonic the Hedgehog" adventure. While the survey touched on feedback on recent "Sonic" games, it also highlighted what could be a hint at the next upcoming game in the franchise. Reportedly, some of the questions pointed out that the next "Sonic" game may feature crossover characters.

In the survey, fans are asked what they think of crossover titles between Sonic and other games. The poll also listed some choices, among them characters from Nintendo, Capcom, and Disney, and even some big-name franchises like "Dragonball Z" and "Adventure Time" were also mentioned.

While it is still unclear what Sega is planning at this stage, having a crossover title as the next "Sonic the Hedgehog" game is not uncommon. Nintendo has done it with their different fighters on "Super Smash Bros." games, and games like "Pokken Tournament" and "Tekken x Street Fighter" are already in the pipeline.

Meanwhile, aside from a rumored new installment, the "Sonic" franchise will have another 3DS title, "Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice." The handheld game is expected to come out in September, and as a celebration of the 25th year anniversary of "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise, the game will come out with bonus items. There is a DVD included in the 3DS copies, containing three episodes of the "Sonic Boom"-inspired animated series. Other details are expected to come out at the upcoming E3 2016, and rumor has it that Sega is also looking to officially announce the upcoming major title for a summer reveal.
