Former Bachelor star Sean Lowe and his wife Catherine Giudici thought it would be a hilarious April Fool's prank if they posted a photo of her bulging stomach on Instagram and captioned it "17 weeks." But some people actually thought the joke was offensive and Catherine received a lot of scathing comments because of her post.
"Now let me give you some background on where this joke came from - on nearly every picture Catherine posts on Instagram, she gets flooded with comments from people who tell her she looks pregnant," Lowe said in his Patheos blog.
The couple understands that people are just excited for them to get pregnant and start a family, but Lowe said that it is tough for any woman to hear that she looks pregnant especially if she's not. He added that they merely posted it as a way to play off "the bombardment of pregnancy comments she reads every day."
But what happened next shocked them. Catherine received hundreds to thousands of comments from angry people saying that she's insensitive and disrespectful to those who are struggling with fertility.
"That's summing it up in the nicest way possible. There were a few who got really nasty and called her things that aren't worth mentioning," Lowe said.
He said understands that there are a lot of people who are hurting because of their struggles with fertility, but he believes that his wife's Instagram account is not the place to vent out feelings of worry, frustration, and anger.
"The ironic part is that Catherine has a huge heart for women who are struggling with fertility. In fact, she was brought to tears just this past Saturday after a friend of ours told us she lost her child in the womb. If you know anything about Catherine or have followed her for any length of time, then you know that she is one of the most caring, compassionate people you will ever meet," said Lowe.
The former Bachelor then said that he hopes people will finally get over Catherine's Instagram post and simply appreciate the social media site for what it truly is - "a place to post pictures of dogs in costume and shirtless selfies."
