"Resident Evil: Vendetta" will have a limited release in theaters on June 19 in North America. The digital edition will then be up for grabs one day later, on June 20. The 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD versions of "Resident Evil: Vendetta" will be available on July 18.

According to GameSpot, buying the 4K and Blu-ray versions will allow players to access additional content, including six featurettes, a still gallery, and Japanese audio commentary provided by director Takanori Tsujimoto, executive producer Takashi Shimizu, and writer Makoto Fukami. The digital and DVD copies will have bonus content as well; however, the former will come with only three instead of six featurettes, while the latter is not bundled with any.

"Resident Evil: Vendetta" is the third installment of the animated film franchise, following "Resident Evil: Degeneration," which was released in 2008, and "Resident Evil: Damnation," which came out in 2012. All three films are set in the same timeline as the games.

The movie features Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy, who partnered in "Resident Evil 6." It also includes Rebecca Chambers, who first appeared in the first "Resident Evil" game and was one of the leads in the prequel "Resident Evil 0." The story will feature the three investigating Glenn Arias, a "merchant of death" who wants to unleash the T-virus in New York.

The movie is intended to serve as a pre-cursor to "Resident Evil 7," according to GamesRadar. Two trailers were previously released to tease fans about the film, the latest of which caused several reactions from fans owing to its similarity to the fight scenes in "John Wick 2."

According to an initial review, the movie combines "survival horror" with "over-the-top action," with the film split almost cleanly in half to feature both elements. The first segment features the team exploring a mansion in classic "Resident Evil" fashion. The second part is described as a combination of action flicks such as "The Matrix," "Equilibrium," and "John Wick."

The animated film will first be released in Japan on May 28.
