'Red Dead Redemption 2' release date: Third 'Red Dead' game to roll out in 2018?

"Red Dead Redemption 2" is expected to arrive sometime in 2018. Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption

It's been six years since the release of the western action-adventure video game "Red Dead Redemption," and it seems many gamers are waiting for a sequel, given the numerous rumors circulating about it. For one, "Red Dead Redemption 2" has allegedly been confirmed by the game publisher and, for another, there is said to be a name attached to it already.

A headline on GameNGuide reads, "Rockstar Games Confirms Sequel," although the article itself says the company has yet to issue to an official announcement. There are also reports that it is not likely to be released earlier than 2018, but this, too, is just mere speculation, as are reports of it coming out after Sony and Microsoft release their next-gen consoles.

The article also surmises that it is "highly possible" for the next installment in the "Red Dead" game series to bear the title "Legends of the West." Vine Report, on the other hand, reports that it might be called "Red Dead 3" instead of "Red Dead Redemption 2." This is because it is believed that a new gameplay, as well as a new protagonist, will be introduced.

Fans will recall that the first game, titled "Red Dead Revolver," featured Red Harlow while the second, "Red Dead Redemption" featured John Marston. Therefore, it is speculated that the third game, if it is in pipeline, might center an all-new character. One fan even sent Rockstar his idea of a bow-wielding, gun-slinging native American female lead, as shown in a mock-up poster and game package posted on Imgur.

Meanwhile, some are predicting that the game will have a VR version, although another GameNGuide article says that before the developer/publisher reveals the alleged sequel, they might put into consideration the not-so-impressive performance of VR headsets in the market.

For now, Rockstar Games is still silent on whether or not there will be a third "Red Dead" game.
