PS4 Neo release date news: PlayStation upgrade rumored to launch September with Slim model

The PlayStation 4 Sony Entertainment

Sony is said to be releasing a number of new products come September. Aside from the rumored PS4 Neo, a slimmer version of the current-gen console is also in the works.

According to Business Insider, Sony is planning to unveil the two new consoles on Sept. 7. Of the two new consoles, the PS4 Neo is currently the focus of PlayStation fans, as the new release is expected to be the interim, step-up release before Sony hopefully goes to work on the PS5. As a step-up version, the PS4 Neo is confirmed to carry major upgrades and improvements over the current-gen console, both in terms of power and performance. Although Sony has yet to come out with press images of the new console, the PS4 Neo is also expected to come out with fresh design.

Meanwhile, the surprise addition to the lineup is the PS4 Slim, and is said to be Sony's answer to the recently-releases Xbox One S. However, while the slimmer Microsoft console has upgraded its specs, the PS4 Slim only refreshed its design. Under the hood, the new console has the same specs and features as the current-gen Sony console. Microsoft only updated the design and form factor, releasing a slimmer version of the system, as well as updating its controllers.

As for the PS4 Neo, the next-gen console is confirmed to support 4K gaming, and is expected to be compatible with virtual reality via the PlayStation VR. Under the hood, Sony has yet to come out with the specs sheet for the Neo, though it has already confirmed that the new console will have a new graphics chipset that is more powerful than the current set, as well as tweaked processor and onboard storage.

Fans will get the chance to see the PS4 Neo as early as next week, though Sony has yet to come out with its price tag. Speculations suggest that as a major upgrade, the PS4 Neo may breach the $500-$600 range.
