Pastor Rick Warren tells what attitude Christians should have on racism

People approach the issue of racism in their own ways. For Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church, the worst approach is to become a "racist," since this person is someone who "hates another race or bullies another race or discriminates against another race."

There are also "bigots," says Warren in a sermon. Bigots are only slightly better than racists because they are people who "believe stereotypes about a particular race, and belittles other people."

Next to "bigots," there are "avoiders," who act uncomfortably whenever they are with people who are different from them.

Then there are  the "insensitive" people who are oblivious to how judgment can hurt others.

There are also the "apathetic" people who don't care at all about the issue of racism.

In contrast, "sensitive" people sound very nice because they are always "kind and inclusive" to people of different races.

But Warren says Christians should take a step up from being "sensitive" and become a "reconciler," since this kind of person is an "active bridge builder" who reflects biblical values.

"Racism is the most common sin in the world," says Warren, and the only way people can rise above it all is to "see people as God does."

He quotes 1 Samuel 16:7: "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

Warren says people must also change the way they listen to other people, and try to listen to everyone with respect. If they fail to do so, they become prejudiced. He adds that God does not like prejudice because it questions His creation, and it is a clear sign of ignorance.

Lastly, the pastor says people must love everybody the same way Jesus does. Warren cites John 15:12 to remind people of God's order: "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you."
