NFL News: Jim Harbaugh likely headed to Michigan

With his team, the San Francisco 49ers out of contention, head coach Jim Harbaugh may as well be coaching his last game in the NFL. However if reports are true, it will not be the last time we will see Harbaugh out on the field.

Harbaugh is said to be headed back to his alma mater, the Michigan Wolverines. Though unofficial, sources say that Harbaugh has already made up his mind to accept the coaching offer.

Harbaugh has been mum about his future plans but is not expected back next season although it is believed that the 49ers and Harbaugh will be parting ways after their final game against the Cardinals.

Harbaugh has one year left on his five-year $25 million contract with San Francisco, who has also gained interest from the Oakland Raiders. But from the looks of it, the former star quarterback has already made up his mind.

The 49ers and Harbaugh have had a tumultuous year and a separation has been widely speculated. Harbaugh wasn't able to get along with team owner Jed York, who sided more with G.M. Trent Baalke.

Possibly ending all speculations would be the arrival of Michigan officials Jed Hughes and Mike DeBord in California where they will reportedly meet with Harbaugh. Michigan has dangled a six year $48 million contract to the former Wolverine, something that could be made official soon.

After leading the 49ers to three straight NFC title games and a Super Bowl appearance, goodbyes could be expected after their last match. Harbaugh didn't say goodbye to his players although he did express appreciation for all their support.

As far as a future coaching stint in the NFL once more is concerned, such remains to be seen. If the contract details being offered by Michigan is true, that could be after six years at the minimum.
