Speculations suggest that since Google will showcase its new Android N platform, it will need new devices to launch the mobile OS on. This led to speculations about at least two new Nexus phones coming this year. In addition, it is said that Google tapped HTC to be the maker of the Nexus 2016 editions.

According to The Verge, there are already supposed leaks detailing the next Nexus phones made by HTC. Allegedly, the new Nexus lineups are already deep in development, with the new iterations codenamed M1 and S1. Should the rumor be proven true, this is not the first time that HTC handled Nexus projects for Google. The Taiwan-based tech conglomerate was responsible for the very first Nexus, the original Nexus One handset. The most recent Nexus project handled by HTC is the Nexus 9 tablet (already discontinued).

The industry follower said that while Google has yet to confirm the rumor, HTC being a Nexus maker is certainly plausible. The Nexus 9 tablet has been called a mediocre device, and HTC may be finding a way to redeem itself. Meanwhile, there are reports of Google and HTC already entering into a three-year contract, and a new Nexus lineup may be one of the best ways to open the partnership with.

Meanwhile, as for the release date, it should be noted that it may take at least the end part of the year before the new Nexus phones come out. Reports have mentioned that the Android N platform is still in its beta stages, and Google is planning to produce at least five test versions before releasing the final one. Although Google is having its annual I/O Conference soon, it may take until August or September at the latest for the full version of Android N to be showcased, together with the new Nexus 2016 devices.
