The New York Jets are doing their best to address issues at the quarterback position following the injury to original starter Geno Smith, signing veteran journeyman Matt Flynn Wednesday.

Smith is expected to miss six to 10 weeks after sustaining a broken jaw when he was punched by former teammate and now Buffalo Bills linebacker IK Enemkpali in an altercation earlier in training camp.

Losing Smith left the Jets with only quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with the most experience at the position.

Having no significant backup for Fitzpatrick, New York decided to sign Flynn who was recently released by the New England Patriots because he is still nursing a hamstring injury.

Flynn started practicing the same day he was signed to a deal although he was limited to positional drills, ESPN reported.

In the report, Jets head coach Todd Bowles said they signed Flynn because he was the only one available, although he added that he is a veteran and they need one.

"I'm happy for the opportunity, and now I'm just trying to get acclimated. It's kind of been a whirlwind the last couple of days," Flynn said, according to the Associated Press.

The 30-year-old quarterback added that he never spoke yet with the team what his role will be and his focus right now is learning the playbook. According to Smith, he is still unaware of what's happening on the field when watching his new teammates run plays during practice.

The Jets will be Flynn's sixth team in his National Football League (NFL) career after also spending time with the Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills, and the New England Patriots (practice squad).

Flynn spent the most time with the Packers, having two stints with the team; and last season, he played in eight games for the team completing eight of 16 passes (50 percent) for 66 yards and no touchdown.
