Microsoft could be making one last push to make their smartphones a hit with the latest rumors suggesting they are set on releasing six new Windows Phones.

According to CEO Satya Nadella, the company is still fully committed to their first-party devices, and that would include phones as well.

As of now, there is no official word on when or how many Windows Phones are still to come from the company, but the rumors making the rounds places the number squarely at six, according to Tech Radar.

One of the models likely to be released by Microsoft soon is the Lumia 940XL. The phone will reportedly have a 5.7 inch QHD display along with a Snapdragon 810 processor. Microsoft is also rumored to be working on another Lumia 940.

No official release date has also been set for any of the six new handsets coming from Microsoft, but many have suggested that at least a few of the models will likely be out before the end of the year.

News that Microsoft is reportedly working on releasing six new handsets could also be the company's last ditch effort at making their line of smartphones work, according to Computer World.

Instead of being a featured product, the Windows Phone could ultimately be relegated to a peripheral position in the marketplace not unlike the Surface tablets.

Despite the latest move to reduce the role of the Windows Phone, many analysts are still predicting that the time has passed for the device, and that it may ultimately be too late to salvage it at this point.

Many are suggesting that any hope the Windows Phone has of still succeeding will hinge on the success of the new Windows 10 operating system. If the new operating system can spark renewed interest in the phones, then Microsoft may look into making more than just the rumored six they are planning to.
