MPs' report provides exciting vision of hope - Evangelical Alliance

A proposal by Christian MPs to dramatically change the values that underpin policy decisions could radically transform Britain for the better, the General Director of the Evangelical Alliance has said.

Rev Joel Edwards, who is also a commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission, welcomed the report by five cross-party Christian politicians.

The report, entitled Faith in the Future, said that unhappiness is primarily caused by an absence of key values, and called for a five-fold test to assess new action and policies.

These would include asking whether they encourage people to develop positive relationships, are socially and globally responsible, or promote a climate of trust, hope and respect.

Mr Edwards said: "Values such as trust, respect and hope are vital to the well-being of a society. They may reflect the example shown by Jesus, but people from every faith or none can agree to them and find happiness through them.

"This report provides an exciting, hope-filled vision for the future."

Church leaders, including Rev Edwards and the Alliance's Director of Public Theology, Dr R David Muir, contributed to the report along with policy experts during a two-year consultation.

Mr Edwards added that the Evangelical Alliance is an integral part of Forum for Change, where Christians involved in the arts, media, business, politics and education have met regularly over the past four years to discuss how to work towards happiness and hope in their spheres of influence.

"This idea is capturing the imaginations of Christians across the country, who are being inspired to see lasting social change for the benefit of all," he said.
