Microsoft Surface Pro 5 release date, specs, features: New hybrid to launch next month?

Speculations suggest that Microsoft will have a major launch planned in October, with the Surface Pro 5 appearing in the event.

While Microsoft has yet to confirm the October press event, having the Surface Pro 5 launch this year is already expected. In fact, supposed leaks of its specs and features have already made their way online. According to speculations, the Surface Pro 5 will carry the latest Intel Kaby Lake processors, an upgraded Surface Pen, and up to 16 GB of RAM. In addition, the new lineup will come out in different configuration options, and rumor has it that the most premium variant will come with 4K display.

However, even if the Surface pro 5 launches next month, fans may need to wait a bit longer before the new slate is seen in the market. It is said that the October launch will launch the Surface Pro 5 but only as a debut piece. The user versions for the new lineup will appear for global release in early 2017 instead.

Reportedly, one indicator of a 2017 release is Microsoft's own schedule roadmap. The company has already revealed that it is considering a major update for the Windows 10 platform. However, the Redstone 2 update is expected to come out in two parts, with the first one completing its rollout by next month. Meanwhile, the major update will become complete with a second patch coming out next year. Since Microsoft is already expected to feature an upgraded Windows 10 platform for its new Surface devices, then it is likely that the Surface Pro 5 will be released in the market right after the Redstone 2 update is completed.

In addition, it seems Microsoft will be shifting its focus for this year. The company will reportedly be releasing a new product lineup, the Surface AIO (All-in-One), this coming October. With a new lineup, Microsoft may be thinking that current-generation lineup follow-ups like the Surface Pro 5 and the Surface Book 2 could take a backseat for now.
