Microsoft Surface Book 2 release date, specs: second edition to feature GTX 1060?

Speculations suggest that Microsoft will be featuring cutting-edge specs for its new Surface products and may even include new technology like the recently released GTX 1060 GPU, particularly in the Surface Book 2.

According to industry followers, Microsoft is targeting an upgrade overhaul for its Surface products, particularly the already-expected Surface Book 2. WCCFTech surmises that since the new Surface products will carry the new-gen Intel Kaby Lake processor, the chipset will be paired with recent GPU technology. Since Nvidia has been a partner for Surface products in previous iterations, it may well be that the graphics cards for the new Surface Book 2 come from the GTX 10 family, starting with the base model GTX 1060.

However, The Motley Fool doesn't agree with this assessment. It is already established that the new GTX 10 lineups are discreet GPUs for dedicated desktop graphics. According to the industry observer, a GTX card in a mobile device is highly unlikely given its physical design and architecture. The GTX 10 series is also designed for massive power input, and a mobile device's powerhouse may prove inadequate. Unless Nvidia comes out with a thinner, smaller, mobile version of its new GTX 10 series, a GTX 1060 on either the Surface Book 2 or the Surface Pro 5 is not possible to date.

While the current-gen Surface Book is highly popular, its preference may be more on documentation and mobile business people. Meanwhile, although the Surface Book has above-average specs, most graphics-focused users may think of switching to its rival, the iPad Pro. The base models for the Surface Book has average graphics cards, and users will have to upgrade to the more expensive, top-tier versions for better graphics quality. The premium version of the Microsoft Surface Book features a discreet Nvidia graphics card that works in tandem with the onboard GPU.
