Michael Schumacher latest health updates: F1 racer is 'making progress'

Eighteen months after sustaining severe head injuries in an ill-fated skiing accident in the French Alps back in December 2013, F1 legend Michael Schumacher is "making progress," his manager Sabine Kehm told Sport-Informations-Dienst back in May. This serves as the latest update on his recovery.

Although assuring that Schumacher is well on his way to recuperation, with the process of rehabilitation still a long way to go, Kehm reminded concerned fans of the "seriousness of his injuries." While convalescence isn't as evasive as it was, it still requires time.

Back in November, Philippe Streiff, a former F1 driver and Schumacher's close friend, revealed that Schumacher was "getting better" but he had memory problems. Kehm, however, dismissed the statement as "factually wrong." It was also around that time that Kehm confirmed that there's "a long and difficult road ahead" on the way to recovery.

Also back in November, one of Schumacher's doctors, Jean-Francois Payen, revealed that it might take years before the seven-time F1 champion will fully restore his form.

"I have noticed some progress but I would say we will have to give him time," Payen said. "It is like for other patients. We are in a time scale of one to three years, so you need patience."

Payen is said to be working for Schumacher 24/7 with 15 medical professionals.

Schumacher was out of coma four months after the accident. He was moved from Grenoble Hospital to Lausanne on June last year for rehabilitation. It wasn't until September of last year that he was taken to his home in Lake Geneva to be surrounded by loved ones as he recovers.

In February last month, an insider told Express that "progress is painfully slow" and that "there is no miracle on the horizon." Refusing to be shaken, fans of the racer remain as hopeful as the persons closest to him.
