4A Games is taking bold new steps in another direction with the upcoming "Metro Exodus" — the latest in the "Metro" game series" — as the new features of the post-apocalyptic game will see players out in the open.

It seems "Metro Exodus" will be living up to its name by trading some gameplay sequences in the dank subways of Moscow for a wide open irradiated Russian wilderness, with the developers announcing that the game's setting will be a large open area.

As such, the game will be much significantly different from its two predecessors that both took place in the dark and claustrophobic metro railways creeping with monstrosities and paranormal activities. Of course being a "Metro" game, the sequel will probably not skip those elements, since the surface of the game world is actually the most exposed to nuclear winter, meaning a lot more dangerous mutants and anomalies await the players there.

It seems the game still begins in the Metro, which has become the safest haven for survivors of a nuclear war in Russia, but quickly moves the players out into the open. Sadly it will not be one large open world area like "Fallout" or "Skyrim" but instead there will be several large interconnected sandbox areas where sidequests can be played. However, should players proceed and progress to the next area, the previous ones will be locked, so it would be wise to make sure everything is accomplished before moving on to a different area.

There were also some changes due to the different environment in-game, one of which is the currency. In the previous two games, military-grade ammunition was utilized as currency; this time around, the currency will be in the form of materials that can be turned into various useful items, quite like a barter system. The open area will also allow for several vehicles that can be used to roam the land freely and as another form of transportation apart from the steam engine train called "Aurora" in-game.

The game's story will also span a year in narrative compared with the short duration of the previous titles. No exact release date has been announced yet but "Metro Exodus" is expected to arrive later this year.
