Mark Burnett and Roma Downey's new movie "Ben-Hur" has received praises from the faith community prior to its release on Aug. 19 this year.

"Ben-Hur" is a modern adaptation of Lew Wallace's classical novel "Ben-Hur," which follows the story of a Jew named Judah Ben-Hur who was betrayed by his adopted brother Messala, according to the Gospel Herald. Forced into slavery, Ben-Hur works his way up from the ranks until he becomes the adopted son of a prominent Roman soldier.

Ben-Hur has his heart set on revenge and plans on beating Messala at chariot racing. However, a chance encounter with Jesus Christ changes Ben-Hur's life for good, and he comes to terms with the fate he's been dealt with.

Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the Archdiocese of Boston, says the movie's theme of forgiveness is something that will inspire moviegoers. "You will be lifted out of your seat, transported into a time and place beyond your expectations, and your heart will be moved by the depth of Jesus' power to change our lives for the better," he says.

Pastor Wilfredo "Choco" de Jesus of New Life Covenant Church calls it "a clear and poignant message of faith and forgiveness," while Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church describes it as "a movie that will give hope to people who are just trying to survive."

Christian Youth Film Festival Executive Director Joe Brown says the "breathtaking" movie really moved him. Rev. Dr. Gabriel Salguero, who is the president of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, calls it a "majestic" offering.

Pastor Bobby Gruenewald of Life Church says "Ben-Hur" is a "thrilling, epic film." Sister Rose Pacatte agrees. She says the classical story has been "made new again in the Year of Mercy."

Pastor Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church also has nothing but good words for the movie. "Ben-Hur is spectacular in every way and is sure to become an instant classic," he gushes.

Ben-Hur is portrayed by Jack Huston, while Messala is played by Toby Kebbell. Morgan Freeman plays Ilderim while Rodrigo Santoro plays Jesus.
