Los Angeles Lakers rookie point guard and 2015 no. 2 pick D'Angelo Russell called the retired Tracy McGrady the greatest of all-time (GOAT) in a tweet a few weeks ago which caused turmoil to Lakers fans; and in an interview during the weekend, he discussed the deleted post.
"There's a lot of spoiled Lakers fans. I wasn't downgrading Kobe at all. I was just watching a highlight tape of Tracy McGrady and I got excited. I tweeted and the whole state of California went crazy," Russell told the Los Angeles Daily News.
In the tweet Russell said McGrady "might have been" the GOAT to which Lakers star Kobe Bryant responded with a sleeping emoji.
Bryant is one of those players whose name always pop up on the "best player ever" debates and discussions especially to die-hard Lakers fans so Russell's tweet instantly became a hot topic.
But the 19-year-old rookie said everything is okay between him and Bryant, adding that the latter was "was cool" with what happened according to the Los Angeles Daily News.
In the report by the Los Angeles Daily News, Russell also expressed his eagerness to see Bryant and one of the greatest point guards to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Steve Nash.
Nash will likely be mentoring Russell, who is expected to be the face of the franchise in the future together with another budding guard in Jordan Clarkson.
Russell struggled during his Summer League stint where the Lakers only managed to win one of the five games they played.
The former Ohio State Buckeye started in all five games and had good numbers but his turnover average of 5.2 per game was noticeable since during his lone year in college he only averaged around three turnovers per contest.
Russell will have the chance to bounce back as the Lakers open their training camp next month.
