Viewers of the hit documentary series "Scientology and the Aftermath" better get ready to be intrigued, as the show details and investigates how David Miscavige, the head of the Church of Scientology, rose to power since the death of his predecessor L. Ron Hubbard.
In the controversial fifth episode of the show's second season, Leah Remini and her partner Mike Rinder, both former Scientology members, claimed that following the death of Hubbard, Miscavige spent the next few years expelling high-ranking church officials. The said officials included Ron's widow, Mary Sue Hubbard, and 20 other executives, including Rinder.
Miscavige was also reported to have recorded a conversation between him and Mary Sue, which led to the latter losing her power in the church, as well as removing Ron's second-in-command after his death.
Scientologist John "JB" Brousseau, who left the church back in 2010, said that this maneuver left no one else in the way, making Miscavige the chairman of the board of Religious Technology Center (RTC), which allegedly was his goal even before Ron's death. Brousseau also added that Miscavige had been plotting and asserting power even before he replaced Ron.
The show is speculated to have caused friction between Remini and her former scientology colleagues, as there are notable Scientologists who might be attending the Emmy Awards ceremony, which Remini is expected to attend since she won a trophy for Outstanding Information Series for "Scientology and the Aftermath." It is still unknown whether she will be attending the said ceremony, however.
The Church of Scientology has been quite vocal about their denouncement of Remini's show and has several big-name members in Hollywood. These famous Scientology stars include John Travolta, Tom Cruise, and Elizabeth Moss. While they are not yet confirmed to be attending the ceremony, Remini expressed confidence that no such confrontation will happen because the Scientology stars are not allowed to reach out to her since they, apparently, have been taught that Remini meant them harm.
Remini also shared her gratitude to fans and viewers of the show, as well as the people who voted for her in the aforementioned Emmy category.
