After receiving the most prestigious honor as the first-ever rap artist to win a Pulitzer Prize, Kendrick Lamar made a celebratory trip to the Vatican with his long-time fiancée Whitney Alford.
TMZ reported that Lamar and his future wife, as well as their entire entourage, went to various museums and notable sites in Rome and blended in happily with the rest of the tourists without being mobbed. The music legend, after all, rarely hits the papers or isn't often seen in public aside from his performances and shows.
Lamar won the Pulitzer Prize for excellence in music composition for his album "Damn," which was released in April 2017. Its theme is centered on God, religion, spirituality, politics, and the existential crisis.
NPR noted that "Damn" is a sort of lamentation for Lamar who conveys, through his raps, the sentiment that America has lost its moral compass and become a turbulent society. Fans also hailed the entire album's narrative with its parables and religious undertones. Lamar revealed that the album spoke about his fear of God.
"Our God is a loving God," Lamar told DJ Booth in a letter. "But he's even more so a God of DISCIPLE. OBEDIENCE. A JEALOUS God," he wrote. "And for every conscious choice of sin, will be corrected through His discipline."
"Damn" is filled with music that praises God for both His power to both create and destroy. Lamar said that he felt the need to share the joy and fear in God so his fans could understand that balance exists and it's up to man to "try harder at choosing my battles wisely."
The award-winning Christian artist also shared that God is using him and his musical talents to get His message across, and that he believes this to be his purpose in life.
