Katy Perry quoted Psalm 118 before she performed at the Super Bowl

Pop sensation Katy Perry seems to be clinging on to her Christian roots and values since she tweeted on her account (@katyperry) a Psalm verse right before her Super Bowl XLIX performance.

"Today is the day that the Lord has made! I will rejoice and be glad in it," she tweeted Psalm 118:24 to her over 64 million Twitter followers on February 1.

Perry sang her hit songs "Roar," "I Kissed a Girl," and "Teenage Dream" duringthe halftime show with other artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, and ended with her song "Fireworks." She then shouted after her performance, "God bless America!"

Perry started her singing career with Christian music, and is the daughter of evangelical ministers Keith and Mary Hudson. Her parents disapproved of her career originally but it seems like her father has made peace with it.

"I don't have a problem. She's gonna do some good ones - she's excited," he told the Daily Mail.

He earlier called her the "devil's child" and lamented that Perry's music influences the youth the wrong way.

"They ask how can I preach if I produce a girl who sang about kissing another girl? I was at a concert of Katy's where there were 20,000. I'm watching this generation and they were going at it. It almost looked like church. I stood there and wept and kept on weeping and weeping. They're loving and worshipping the wrong thing," he said in a sermon last year.

For her part, Perry earlier told Marie Claire magazine that she believes in God even though she refuses to be categorised in a specific religion.

"I'm not a Buddhist, I'm not a Hindu, I'm not a Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God," she said. "I pray all the time–for self-control, for humility. There's a lot of gratitude in it. Just saying 'thank you' sometimes is better than asking for things."
