Katy Perry has lost her Christian faith but not her faith in angels

Pop superstar Katy Perry told fans that an experience at a recent concert made her think about spirituality and whether angels are still looking out for her.

Perry tweeted that she was singing "Grace of God" and began thinking about the heavenly beings.

"My favourite part of the night was when I was singing By the Grace of God & a little white feather (presumably from a costume) floated by..." she wrote, "& it reminded me about the angels & how, maybe, they are still looking after me, helping me continue to put one foot in front of the other."

The next day, she tweeted a picture of herself at age "14 or 15" wearing a shirt that said "POPSTAR." She followed that post with a link to song by rapper Childish Gambino, and the lyrics "And if I lose my mental just hold my hand even if you don't understand."

Perry was raised in a strict, Pentecostal Christian household. Her parents are Pastors Keith and Mary Hudson of Keith Hudson Ministries in California. The 29-year-old's debut album was a gospel recording called "Katy Hudson," released on Red Hill Records. The album performed poorly, and Perry began writing pop and rock songs. Her breakthrough single was the 2008 hit, "I Kissed a Girl."

In December 2013, Perry denounced Christianity and all other religions, but said that she maintains a relationship with God and practises Transcendental Meditation.

"I don't believe in a heaven or a hell or an old man sitting on a throne," she told Marie Claire.

"I believe in a higher power bigger than me because that keeps me accountable. Accountability is rare to find, especially with people like myself, because nobody wants to tell you something you don't want to hear.

"I'm not Buddhist, I'm not Hindu, I'm not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God. I pray all the time—for self-control, for humility. There's a lot of gratitude in it. Just saying 'thank you' sometimes is better than asking for things."

Perry is currently on her "Prismatic World Tour," traveling across Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and 18 European countries through March 2015.
