Jonathan Veira raises the bar with latest release

Jonathan Veira brings a fresh touch to old favourites with his latest album, “You Raise Me Up”.

The 10 tracks include favourites like “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”, all set to new arrangements. His uplifting version of R Kelly’s “I believe I can fly” is a highlight.

You may think to yourself ‘Well, I’ve heard these songs before so what makes these versions any different?’ Firstly, Jonathan’s voice is fantastic, as it should be for someone who is an internationally acclaimed bass baritone singer. His classical renditions just do these church favourites the vocal justice they deserve.

That coupled with the instrumental accompaniments give this compilation a really natural and almost live performance feel, perfect for listening to during moments of quiet reflection, resting in God or reading a psalm.

Veira has built a strong fan base around the UK, as one of the most invited guests on the BBC’s Songs of Praise and headlining events like Spring Harvest, New Wine, Detling and Keswick.

“You Raise Me Up”, his fifth album, looks set to consolidate that following. With a big heart and a really big personality, there is undoubtedly more to come from this strong performer. Let’s wait and see.

The verdict: 3 out of 5
