John Cena news: Wrestler to play Dr. Manhattan in upcoming 'Watchmen' series from HBO?

Rumors are swirling that World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star John Cena may have gotten the role of the iconic character Dr. Manhattan in the upcoming "Watchmen" series on HBO.

The famous wrestler and actor is known for giving hints about what projects he's interested in or may be doing on his social media accounts. When he shared a picture on Instagram showing the "Watchmen" character Comedian's smiley face badge, fans and entertainment pundits started to speculate that Cena may be in the running for the Dr. Manhattan role in the new series. The wrestler then posted another picture showing Dr. Manhattan fan art which once again fanned the flames of the noteworthy rumor.

Cena yet again shared another picture of the iconic circular sign on Dr. Manhattan's forehead, making many fans think that he is very close to nabbing the much-coveted role. However, the comedic actor remains cryptic on social media and has not shared anything else apart from the pictures.

It remains to be seen if Cena will get to portray the superhuman character who is inarguably the most powerful hero among the Watchmen. If he gets the job, it would potentially be the first high-profile project in his career.

The "Watchmen" series is being developed by Damon Lindelof who is known for his work on "Lost," "Star Trek: Into Darkness" and "Prometheus." It will be based on the graphic novel of the same title by critically-acclaimed writer Alan Moore.

Lindelof shared in a recent interview at Vulture Festival L.A. last month, "'Watchmen' — it was dangerous. And you can't be dangerous for dangerous's sake, but the reason that I'm doing this is these are dangerous times, and we need dangerous shows."

There is no official word yet regarding the release date of HBO's "Watchmen" series. Stay tuned for more reports as the situation unfolds.
