iPad Air 3 release date: Upcoming Apple press launch centers on MacBooks; slate shelved until 2017?

Supposedly, Apple will have another launch later this year. However, the event is said to focus only on the overhauled MacBook lineups. This means that the anticipated iPad Air 3 will once again move its debut, this time, to early 2017.

Apple has already concluded a press launch earlier this month. However, instead of a complete new lineup launch, the event only showcased the new iPhone 7 and Apple Watch 2. This led to speculations that the Cupertino-based tech giant will have another press event, this time for the overhauled laptop lineups like the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

Since it is expected that the iPad Air 3 will debut later this year, this may mean that the slate will have to make way for other Apple lineups once again. It was previously expected that the new iPad Air version will debut in late 2015, but it has been set aside for the release of the original iPad Pro. Its supposed launch earlier this year has been thwarted once again, at that time by the 9.7-inch version of the iPad Pro. If the supposed late 2016 release has been reset, it will be the third time for the expected iPad Air slate.

Meanwhile, there are talks suggesting that instead of getting a delay, Apple has ultimately decided to release the iPad Air 3 alongside the iPad Pro 2 lineup early next year. The iPad Air 3 will reportedly serve as the entry-level variant for the Apple tablet lineup, while the 9.7-inch version of the iPad Pro 2 will take over as a mid-range slate. At the top of the Apple slate series will be two iPad Pro 2 iterations, with the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch variants sporting a new A10X chipset. The base model iPad Pro 2, on the other hand, will get an A9X processor. The iPad Air 3 is expected to run on an A9 chipset, the previous-generation processor on the iPhone 6 and 6S.
