iOS 8 battery problems for iPhone 4, 5 and 5S: How to improve it?

Shortly after the release of iOS 8, many have already complained about the Apple operating system update. Among the complaints is the shorter battery life compared to the previous iOS versions. How true is this, when Apple said the iOS 8 will feature improved battery-life performance?

Apple fans have long anticipated the release of iOS 8, which came just a week after the iPhone 6 was introduced. The update is available for iPhones, iPod Touch and iPads. Included in the features are new widgets, a notification center, and third-party keyboard support. But regardless of the new features, Apple cannot escape the wrath of users who claim that iOS 8 causes poor battery life.

To clear out this problem, ArsTechnica made a comparison between the battery life of iOS 8 vs iOS 7.1.2. Both devices were running on Wi-Fi. ArsTechnica shared a photo of the comparison per Apple device.

Seeing the comparison, iOS 8's battery life isn't bad at all. In fact, it is at par with the previous iOS version, and is even better on some Apple devices. It can be seen that the iPad mini enjoys the most improvement in battery performance when using iOS 8.

If these are the results of the test, then why are some people complaining about the poor battery performance? It may be due to the apps running in the background, which users couldn't do anything about before. Now this has changed.

Forbes reports that while iOS 8 is destroying iPhone 4s, Apple added a feature on the new OS that can actually improve the battery life of the device further. Users do have to note that such feature is already on some Android devices.

Background apps could be the cause of faster battery drain. Even if a user already has the iPhone 6, which features improved battery life, the background apps can still pose a problem to the device's performance.

As a solution, users need to go Settings, General, Usage, then Battery Usage. There, they will see all the apps currently running on the device, and they can kill the ones they don't need. Maybe people who are complaining can try this trick and see how it works out.
