iOS 8.1.2: Minor update released by Apple

iOS 8

Apple released another update for iOS 8 on Tuesday, and like the previous iOS 8.1.1 version rolled out last Nov. 17, iOS 8.1.2 is a minor update. Primarily, it addresses the issue of disappearing ringtones.

The message from the company reads: "This release includes bug fixes and addresses a problem where ringtones purchased through the ITunes Store may have been removed from your device. To restore these ringtones, visit itunes.com/restore-tones from your iOS device."

According to MacRumors, the iOS 8.1.2 was not seeded to developers prior to its release since it is merely a patch to address certain bugs. Instead, it was immediately made available to iOS users via over-the-air transmission. The update requires less than 30 MB of space to download, but apart from the ringtone issue, Apple has not identified the other problems that it addresses.

The current iOS 8.1.2 update is the fifth one that Apple has rolled out since iOS 8 was released on Sept. 17, along with a new pair of iPhone models, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Since then, the company has been busy creating fixes to address the numerous issues that plague the new operating system. The first update was 8.0.1 released on Sept. 24, which was immediately withdrawn due to the further issues it caused, primarily with the cellular network connectivity. The second was 8.0.2 introduced on Sept. 25; the third was 8.1 rolled out last Oct. 20; and the fourth was 8.1.1 which the public received on Nov. 17. The 8.2 beta was released to developers on Nov. 18 but not to the general public.

Unlike iOS 8.1.2, the upcoming iOS 8.2 update is expected to be a major one. The pre-release version of iOS 8.2 beta was seeded to developers last month along with Xcode 6.2 beta with WatchKit SDK so developers can start creating applications for the upcoming Apple Watch. Apple has yet to announce the release date of iOS 8.2.
