Huawei Mate 9 release date, specs rumors: New teaser reveals 20-MP dual cam feature

An alleged teaser for the upcoming Huawei Mate 9 reportedly confirms one noted feature for the flagship.

According to GSM Arena, a leaked teaser out of China apparently confirms that the Huawei Mate 9 will feature the same dual-cam setup that Huawei featured in its current-generation flagship, the P9 lineup. In addition, the setup will be getting an upgrade, with a new 20-MP dual-cam assembly instead of the 12-MP one on the current iteration. However, it remains to be seen if Huawei will also feature the same Leica-engineered lenses for the Huawei Mate 9.

Meanwhile, although the China-based tech maker has yet to confirm the details, speculations suggest that the Mate 9 will still make it to a late 2016 release. Previously, it was rumored that Huawei will be unveiling the new flagship during the 2016 IFA in Berlin. However, the trade event concluded without the Mate 9 being showcased.

There are rumors that Huawei will be unveiling the new flagship in December. While unconfirmed, the timeline seems likely, since the company has been habitually releasing its Mate series flagships during the end of the year. The current-generation Mate 8 was released in November last year, while the Mate 7 debuted in October 2014.

As for its features and specs, the Huawei Mate 9 is being fleshed out to be one of the top-tier releases for this year. Aside from the dual-cam feature, the new flagship is supposed to get the upcoming Kirin 960 processor, as well as 6 GB of RAM. Onboard storage is pegged at 64 GB, though it is unclear if other storage options will be available. Other purported specs include a fingerprint sensor at the back and stereo speakers. The Mate 9 is also expected to come out with Android Nougat 7.0, layered with Huawei's own Emotion UI platform.
