It looks like Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) is about to find some peace in the new season of "Homeland." As she starts over in Berlin with a new job and a new man, the former CIA agent is going to be re-evaluating her life as she turns to a higher power and completely immerses herself in the joys of motherhood.
Speaking to TVGuide, executive producer Alex Gansa said that Carrie's new state of mind in season 5 helps to keep the show moving forward.
"The truth is that the longevity of the series is going to be determined by Carrie's emotional journey and how many times we can find a new story to tell for her," said Gansa.
The producer said that the new season will find "a fully humanized" Carrie now that she has distanced herself from the CIA and dealt with what she has done to fight the war against terror.
Gansa said that Carrie will turn to her faith as she feels that she is in need of forgiveness for all that she has done in the past.
"She needs to forgive herself or to be forgiven for the sins she's committed in her professional work as an intelligence officer, and so she's come back to the church," he said. The producer added that turning to her faith and doing good works are some of the ways that Carrie has tried to seek atonement for all the lives that were lost because of her actions.
Carrie will also be trying to become a good mother to her daughter. In the last season, she was so troubled that she contemplated drowning the child. But now, she will be trying to do her very best as she is no longer under the CIA.
"She's still learning as she goes along [but] she has recommitted herself to be a mother," said Gansa.
But expect Carrie's peaceful life to be interrupted after a task given to her by her new employer, Otto During, will force her to touch base with the CIA. Further into the season, she'll be revisiting old cases. To do that, she will have to convince herself and her boyfriend, Jonas, to go off her medication to activate the part of her bipolar brain that enables her to do her work.
Will Carrie be dragged back into the workings of the CIA? And what will this mean for her and Jonas?
"For Carrie to be fully known, somebody would have to embrace all of her," said Gansa.
"Homeland" airs on Sundays at 9/8c on Showtime.
