"Harry Potter" fans can continue living in the fantasy world that writer J.K. Rowling has created through an augmented reality game called "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite." Patterned after well-loved game "Pokemon GO," players can interact with and hunt down magical creatures that will seemingly dwell in the "real world." This will allow users to see the world with a "wizarding world lens."
Both games were developed by Niantic, and with the worldwide fanbase of the "Harry Potter" series, the game version is expected to break even bigger records that were previously set by "Pokemon GO." According to John Hanke, the founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Niantic said that "soon we'll turn the fantasy into augmented reality, allowing fans and their friends to become wizards and witches." J.K. Rowling's Pottermore website also announced that the game is officially under Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment under the new label called Portkey Games.
"Harry Potter: Wizards Unite" will provide its players the thrill of exploring "real-world neighbourhoods and cities to discover mysterious artefacts, learn to cast spells, and encounter legendary beats and iconic characters along the way!"
Along with its similarities with "Pokemon GO," this augmented reality game will also derive inspiration from another game from Niantic, the cult classic game called "Ingress." Following their systems, players can explore various types of environment in real time, collect boosts along the way, and defend their locations.
Since the game will encourage players to step outside and take part in a series of adventures, Pottermore expressed excitement over it by saying, "Who knows who you'll spot in your local park? You'll also be able to cast spells, discover mysterious artefacts, and build up your very own, illustrious wizarding career."
Portkey Games is yet to release more details about pricing, release dates, and download information, but they have announced that fans can expect the game this year. Updates will be available on the official website, where fans can also sign up to get more updates leading up to its release.
