Game company Bungie unveiled the first trailer of the upcoming "Halo: The Fall of Reach" animated series at the San Diego Comic-Con last week. It was revealed that the mini-series will focus on the mysterious history of the Spartan II program, as well as the origins of the Master Chief and Blue Team.

Based on the novel of the same title written by Erik Nylund in 2001, the upcoming animated series will be released in three parts. It will feature the events that happened before and after the Covenant attack on humanity. It will also introduce the members of Blue Team and explain how the legacy of the legendary combat squad was developed.

But while the companion animation series is adapted from the Nylund's novel, Halo franchise development head Frank O'Conner said that it will still feature several tweaks from the original story.

"Without getting into the weeds, we've been careful to align with the novel where it makes sense," O'Conner mentioned in an article posted on the Halo Waypoint blog site, "but in visualizing the universe – which has evolved so much in the intervening years – we were presented with a few challenges, but also a lot of opportunities. So you'll see a few differences, choices of Covenant ship, weapons and so on, but it adheres tightly to the core canon, with a few flourishes here and there to fill in gaps or smooth over previous errors."

The detailed and visually delightful animated series is produced and helmed by the award-winning SEQUENCE Studio based in Vancouver. It is also the same animation team that created the Terminals that were seen in both the "Halo 2: Anniversary" and "Halo 4" releases, but the hour-long series is the studio's most ambitious work for the Halo series at the moment.

The "Halo: The Fall of Reach" animation series will be released alongside the standard and limited editions of "Halo 5: Guardians" on Oct. 27, but it will also be released separately after a week.
