'Grey's Anatomy' Season 11 spoilers: Christina Yang leaves the show but who's staying next season?

"Grey's Anatomy" season 10 ended a few weeks ago with a heartbreaking twist – the departure of Dr. Christina Yang from the hospital where she worked for the past couple of years.

Dr. Yang's exit from the hospital also meant that she will no longer be returning next season. Yes, that's sad news especially for fans that have grown to love the doctor's witty and highly-entertaining character.

Shonda Rhimes, the show's creator, has previously confirmed that Yang's character, portrayed by actress Sandra Oh needed to be booted off the show, but with very good reason.

Since Dr. Yang will be taking over Dr. Burke's practice, this means that she will be able to further her career. As such, Rhimes confirmed that this would result in the doctor's personal and professional growth.

During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter last year, Rhimes revealed that Oh's exit didn't also come easy for her. "As a writer, writing for Sandra is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I would hope that it wouldn't be happening – but I also know Sandra, and I know that it's time for her to have new challenges."

So following the actress' exit next season comes even more spoilers audiences need to watch out for. Two more series regulars will no longer return next season, specifically actress Tessa Ferrer who plays the role of Lea Murphy and Gaius Charles who plays the role of Shane Ross.

Four other original cast members have been confirmed to appear next season, including Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo, Sara Ramiraz and Chandra Wilson.

ABC Network has also confirmed that "Grey's Anatomy" has also been renewed for season 12 and season 11 will air this coming fall. However, the show will follow a split-season format.

Channel President Paul Lee revealed, "We're going to be doing split seasons on most of our shows this year."

Rhimes revealed that season 11 will showcase more of Callie and Arizona's marriage and Alex, although he is no longer employed in the same hospital, will continue to interact with the cast members because of his relationship with Jo.
