GoPro Hero 5 release date: New camera rolls out Oct. 2 starting at $299

GoPro has unveiled its newest action camera lineup, with the base model getting a surprising $299 price tag.

The new lineup is already listed on GoPro's online shop, although it is revealed that the listing will only serve as pre-orders. The Hero 5 lineup is expected to start rolling out by Oct. 2.

Meanwhile, the launch also reveals that the lineup will have a starting price tag of only $299 for the Hero 5 Session. The price tag for the base model is a surprising one, given that new features and improvements have also made it to the entry-level version, not just to the top-tier Hero 5 Black.

During the launch, it is confirmed that both the Hero 5 Session and Black version are capable of shooting 4K videos at a maximum 30 frames per second. In addition, it is revealed that some of the previous rumors on the specs and features for the action cam lineup are on the mark since both cameras are revealed to be water-proofed for up to 33 feet even without housing. The entire lineup also has voice control, and both image and audio capture also have professional-grade electronics. Meanwhile, the Hero 5 launch also simultaneously unveiled the new GoPro Plus cloud-based subscription, where members can automatically back up videos and images taken with both Hero 5 cameras.

One much-awaited improvement for the new GoPro Hero 5 lineup is its camera. Aside from the 4K video capture support, both also have overhauled setups, although the cameras also play into the design of the new action cams. The Hero 5 Session has a smaller sensor, so its setup is maximized at 10 MP. There is also no display feature for the entry-level version, unlike the Hero 5 Black. As a basic model, the Hero 5 Session also lacks pro-level features like a GPS function and the WDR and RAW modes.

The device also came together with the new Karma drone during the launch, which will become available at a later date, Oct. 23.
