Google Nexus 7 (2017) updates: New tablet may be unveiled this year

Fans are already aware that Google is preparing to release the next iteration of its smartphones, the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL. Now, there are speculations that the company is also working on the launch of the Google Nexus 7 (2017).

It has been quite a while since Google updated its tablet lines. Even though the exact reason is unclear, there are rumors that they were supposed to launch it last year but was unable to push through with it because of internal reasons.

Google has been working with Huawei for some of its devices such as the Nexus 6P. According to rumors, Google asked Huawei to remove their brand name in the devices that they launch along with Google. However, the Chinese company does not agree with this and decided to stop manufacturing devices for Google.

Nonetheless, there are speculations that Google Nexus 7 (2017) may be unveiled late this year, as Google is now reportedly working with HTC. Many believe that the upcoming tablet may be released in the last quarter of the year, as the two companies will need to work together for at least two months to develop the device. In addition, Android 8.0 is also expected to launch later this year. Google will most likely ship the Nexus 7 (2017) with the latest Android operating system.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, there were talks about how Google may have accidentally confirmed its second-generation Google Pixel lines, following leaks of codes from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) as noted by Android Police.

According to the technology portal, the codes indicated three codenames being worked on, namely "Muskie," "Walleye," and "Taimen."

Forbes said that these codenames hint the sizes of the upcoming devices, as Google has been doing that since 2012. "Walleye" weights about 11kg and the "Muskie" about 17kg, most likely referring to the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL, respectively.

On the other hand, "Taimen," which is about 100kg, may imply Pixel 2 XXL or the Nexus 7 (2017).
