Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez fight? Saul hopes for rematch against Mayweather

Canelo 'Saul' Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather will be having their own matches for the month of May and whatever happens, the Mexican wants a rematch against the American boxer.

Alvarez and Mayweather faced each other last September 14, 2013 with Mayweather winning via unanimous decision.

According to Alvarez however, he was drained prior to the match after accepting Mayweather's 152-pound catch-weight. Since then, Alvarez has been fighting at the 155 pounds, just one pound above the junior middleweight limit.

For the time-being, Alvarez may need to deal with his upcoming May 9 bout against James Kirkland to be held in Houston. The first thing that Alvarez may need to do is win (convincingly) against Kirkland before he sets his eyes on the yet-to-be defeated American boxer.

A loss (or even a draw) could very well douse any hope of an Alvarez-Mayweather rematch. In all, he would need to convince Mayweather that he deserves a rematch if ever.

For Mayweather, his May 2 fight against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao is the main order of focus right now. While he does have the right to ask for a rematch (should he lose), his next step would depend on what happens after that bout.

The fight stands to make both Mayweather and Pacquiao rich beyond their wildest dreams and retirement could be up in the air. After the acclaimed fight of the century, Alvarez may find it difficult to squeeze himself in the picture unless he comes up with something jaw-dropping that can catapult his fame to the ranks of Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Alvarez was a possible opponent some months back against Puerto Rican boxing champion Miguel Cotto but negotiations bogged down. Fighting Mayweather could be possible if the American boxer does not hang up his gloves.

Mayweather did hint that he could be retiring by the end of 2015 and unless he plans to fight someone else for the duration of the year, his fight with Pacquiao could very well be it.

That is bad news for Alvarez, sad to say.
