Five Bible verses to help you overcome an insatiable appetite for stuff

Hamburgers are tasty but they can be unhealthy too. Pixabay

Have you ever experienced the feeling of wanting to eat more of that delicious burger even after eating two huge servings already? If you have, then you know how dangerous an insatiable appetite for food means.

Having an insatiable appetite for stuff will prove to be a dangerous thing over the long haul. It can be pretty much about anything – it can be a desire to have more gadgets, a continuously updated wardrobe, an uncontrollable appetite for food, or simply the desire to be rich no matter what the cost.

While it's not sin to have a nice smartphone, a new dress, a huge burger, or a high-paying job, it would be good for you to know that when something takes your attention away from God or what He has made you to be or to do, that's when the problem starts. The Bible warns us that "no one can serve two masters." It's either you become a slave to the right things or the wrong things. Remember, what you cannot say "no" to is your true boss (see Romans 6:16).

Are you praying to God for help in breaking free from uncontrollable or insatiable desires? Here are some Bible verses that you can meditate and stand on for your freedom. Remember that you need to obey the Word and not merely read it.

1 Timothy 6:6-7 - "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it."

Job 1:21 - "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised."

Matthew 6:19-20 - "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."

1 Timothy 6:10 - "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."

Hebrews 13:5 - "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.""

Lastly, keep in mind that "if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). Believe that in Christ you can break free from what entangles you.
