Emerging leaders to discuss next generation church

Emerging leaders are to engage in conversations about the future of the church, new expressions of church and its mission in the 21st century.

With statistics painting a bleak picture of declining church attendance, two one-day conferences this weekend will provide attendees with an opportunity to rediscover what a Christ-centred community really means and how they can be involved in leading and shaping the church of the next generation.

The events are a chance for participants to delve into direct discussion with key thinkers on the subjects.

Dr Krish Kandiah from the Evangelical Alliance said: "A lot of things have been written about new expressions of church and encouraging younger leaders, but what has been lacking is real conversation.

"Rather than listen to second hand opinions these consultations are a change for people to find out for themselves what can be learnt but what might also need challenging."

The events, organised by the Evangelical Alliance in partnership with the London Institute of Contemporary Christianity (LICC) and the London School of Theology (LST), will feature Rev Mike Frost who is professor of evangelism and missions at Morling College in Sydney, Australia. Frost is the author of several books including Exiles and the influential The Shaping of Things to Come which he co-wrote with Alan Hirsch.

Next.generation.church on Friday is specifically designed for younger leaders and will take place at the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity. Other contributors to the day's discussions include Antony Billington and Nigel Hopper from LICC and Fred Drummond from the Evangelical Alliance Scotland.

New church, fad or future? at the London School of Theology on Saturday will enable people to engage and converse both with enthusiasts and critics, theologians and practitioners on the subject of fresh expressions of church. Other contributors include Conrad Gempf from LST, Daniel Strange from Oak Hill College and Krish Kandiah from the Evangelical Alliance.
