'Duck Dynasty' star Missy Robertson passes on marriage advice to son Reed: 'You're no longer allowed to come home'

Now that her son Reed Robertson is engaged to his long-time girlfriend Brighton Thompson, "Duck Dynasty" star Missy is passing on some sage marriage advice that she received from her own father: Once Reed gets married, he is no longer allowed to come home.

As shocking and heartless as that advice might sound, Missy writes on her blog that it actually holds a lot of love and wisdom. She recalls how offended she was when she first heard her father say that she is no longer welcome to her childhood home, but her father quickly clarified things for her.

"When you have problems with your husband, and you will, you'll need to work them out. Your mom and I will be here to help you however we can, but you'll have to go home to your husband," her father explained to her.

Surely enough, Missy and her husband Jase got into a lot of fights throughout their marriage. Some of their arguments got so bad that Missy would cry and wish she were back home with her parents. But whenever she is tempted to pack her stuff and head on over to her parents' house, she would always "remember what my dad told me, and I knew I had to go talk to Jase about it."

Missy explains that young people in love get so caught up with their romance that they don't often think about the challenges and pain that comes with any marriage.

"But in reality, those of us who have been married for any length of time can honestly say that the excitement of the nuptials will quickly dissipate into a harsh dose of reality," she explains. "And what is left are two people coming from two different backgrounds from two different families with two different sets of baggage, habits and quirks, and we have to figure out how to make it work."

Missy adds that God is aware of this situation when He created the union of marriage, because He did not want His children to grow up alone. And even though she and Jase had no clue what the future had in store for them, God already did when they exchanged their vows. "He knew it all when he created the institution of marriage long before we ever existed," she says.
