Dr. Strange is a superhero character created by Marvel Comics. He was a neurosurgeon who underwent a debilitating car accident that affected the nerves in his hands resulting to the end of his surgical career. He sought the help of the Ancient One from whom he learned all his mystical abilities.

The popular character, which debuted in the comic book Strange Tales #110 way back July 1963, is now getting a film adaptation, and Ryan Gosling might be on the lead for the role of Dr. Strange.

Ryan Gosling, 33 years old and known for his movies like "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and "Gangster Squad," is now rumored to be taking an ambitious role as a Marvel superhero. Among other actors who were linked with the character of Dr. Strange are Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Ethan Hawke, and Keanu Reeves, but it was Joaquin Phoenix who reportedly almost got the role. According to Hollywood Reporter, Phoenix turned down the opportunity to be the magical superhero for unknown reasons, despite advanced negotiations last July. Phoenix is believed to favor "indie" films over high-rated and grandiose ones.

Marvel Studios is said to have been then seeking Phoenix's replacement. Reports say that Gosling has met the producers and is now dubbed the frontrunner for the iconic superhero. He was also offered the role of Harry Houdini, a famous early 90's illusionist, in an adventure film. Warner Bros. was also reportedly offering him a role on the DC Comics series adaptation of "Suicide Squad."  It seems like Ryan Gosling is opening a lot of doors for action-filled fantasy movies in the coming years.

"Dr. Strange" is set to premiere on the silver screen July 2016. To be directed by "The Exorcism of Emily Rose's" Scott Derrickson, the film still has a long way to go, and with no official statements from Ryan Gosling and the Disney-owned studio, anyone can still play Dr. Strange.
